According to the saying, “Do what you love, and you will never work a day in your entire life.” This is a common refrain among successful entrepreneurs and business books. However, you might find that you have no idea what you would like to do in the first place.

Here are three filters that will help you find what you’re passionate about and develop a business idea that fits your needs.

Get excited about your idea

You might see something on your calendar or on your to-do list that you can’t wait to get started with. It might be an activity, a topic, a television show, a hobby, surfing, or even making wine. The point of this filter, as stated above, is that you should reflect on what gets you excited and make time for it.

Regardless of what it is, this process can help you find what you’re passionate about. Even if it’s something as mundane as watching TV or working in your kitchen, you’ll find it enjoyable.

You have to look for certain things that you can’t wait to do. For instance, you might need to filter out some activities that are not good for you, such as “I want to drink vodka for my business” or “There is no way to start a business unless you are passionate about making vodka.”

When you do it, you lose track of time

You might have lost track of time because of the last time you were completely engulfed in something. For instance, if you were totally overwhelmed by something, you might have said, “Oh, no, Where did the time go?” or “Oh, whatever, I’m turning the phone off.” You might also have gotten lost in the quiet space you went to.

You should then reflect on the filter and see where it leads you. You might also need to ask your partner, parents, or spouse for their observations. You might be too close to what you’re doing and should be open to receiving help from others. Grandparents or relatives can provide valuable observations.

When you get upset when you’re interrupted

You’ve probably locked your office door or found yourself in the basement doing the work that you need to do. Suddenly, someone starts pestering you, and your anger is a sign that you’re passionate about doing something. You might also have gotten angry after receiving a phone call, and you didn’t answer it.

You might get upset because you’re passionate about doing what you’re doing, not because you’re being slowed down.

If you’re passionate about gardening and getting interrupted while you’re doing it, then you might start a landscaping business. You might also want to start a plant nursery or something akin to that. If you’re angry, however, you might just want to get the job done so that you can start another project.

The three filters below will help you determine what you’re passionate about and what you should start a business with. They can also confirm what you already planned on doing, which is a good thing. Before you start a business, make sure that it is authentic to who you are and that it is something that you’re passionate about.
